8 was the magic number. 8 young adults from the borough of Halton came together to sample, prepare and learn about great food and have great fun.
This was an event developed by Halton Youth Service & The Fun Food Chef and involved giving the 8 a week of high octane, fast moving, exciting cookery lessons that they could "pass on" to their friends.
The results were amazing. These young people ranging from 15 to 19 years of age did themselves proud. Their commitment, diligence, development and delivery were astonishing to see.
Barbara Egan attending the final day lunch commented
"The ‘Thank you’ should be to you and the young people involved
I cannot remember a time when I have been so impressed with an achievement such as this throughout my career
Everyone involved had worked so hard and the food was fantastic but most of all the confidence and pride demonstrated by the young people was such a delight to see I am sure that they will go on from strength to strength and will always reflect on the support and guidance shown to them by yourself and ‘Chef Pat’ Congratulations on a magnificent achievement
During the week they learned about food safety, cooked beautiful breads designed by themselves, learned how to make quick easy and healthier, authentic curry, spaghetti bolognese, Italian pizza, barbecue feast and even gutting and preparing fresh sardines along with much much more.
The week ended with the 8 preparing a banquet for 8 invited guests and themselves. This gave them the opportunity to showcase their new talents and the menu included fresh carrot & coriander soup, asparagus & wild mushroom tartlets, slow roast belly of pork, creme brulee, British cheeseboard and coffee.
They also had the opportunity to explain to local dignitaries what they had gained from this project and how they intend to "pass it on"
The course was also structured so that an AQA could be awarded on completion. These 8 amazed and delivered in what was one of the best weeks for The Fun Food Chef...Thanks all of you!
