The Eat Well Plate

The Eat Well plate is an important part of all my presentations and can be used in many ways once I have left.

Using the eatwell plate

The eatwell plate makes healthy eating easier to understand by giving a visual representation of the types and proportions of foods people need for a healthy and well balanced diet.

The eatwell plate is based on the five food groups.

Fruit & Vegetables – Green – Usually the problem for many of us

Starchy Foods –  carbohydrates – Yellow section – quantity isn’t usually a problem but be careful what we cook them in (frying potatoes) spread on them (butter & jams on breads) or serve with them ( rich creamy sauces on pasta). Try and use eholegrain versions when you can.

Dairy – Blue – Yoghurts, milks & cheese – watch out for high fat content products.

Proteins – Meat,  Fish & Beans – We usually eat too much meat and not enough fish and beans (there are more than just baked out there!). Again we can also cook these in more healthy ways.

Fatty & Sweet Foods – Purple – Never a problem for most people to find food in this group that they enjoy. But that is fine in moderation. Not too often and not too many. Use healthier fats and oils to cook with and maybe even sprays.

Activities

  1. Simply discuss with the children what they have eaten during our session. Ask them to identify the food groupd each dish would sit in and discover who has found they like new flavours from the green section today in particular.
  2. Colouring the Eatwell plate is great fun for KS1.

3. Why not use disposable paper plates to create your very own Eatwell plates based on our sessions or on your school meals. IT could be used to print food type pictures.
